In 2018, Ngāti Porou Oranga and the Maurice Wilkins Centre(MWC) hosted the first Tātai Oranga International hui at Iritekura marae, Te Tairāwhiti, addressing key health issues affecting Māori.

This symposium brought together experts from prestigious institutions like Harvard and Cambridge and local community members. Following this, Ngāti Porou Hauora (now Ngāti Porou Oranga NPO) established a research centre at Te Puia Springs Hospital, fostering a strong partnership with MWC.

Since then, Ngāti Porou Oranga has committed to holding bi-annual symposia to fulfil the Health and Research Stakeholder Policyagreement, ensuring that researchers report back to the community transparently and engage in meaningful dialogue. The last symposium occurred in 2021, with the 2023 event delayed due to NPO restructuring.

And so, we are looking forward to bringing together the researchers from around Aotearoa to present their progress and findings at the 2024 Tātai Oranga Symposium for our Ngāti Porou whanau.

This is an incredible opportunity for whānau from Gisborne and up and down the coast to come together, connect and learn about the research findings that impact the health and wellbeing of our people.
