NĀTI PĒPI

Our Nāti Pēpi team includes three dedicated Midwives based across the East Coast — Niwareka in Te Araroa, Ruatoria, and Tokomaru Bay/Uawa — a Rongoā Practitioner, and our E Tipu E Rea Tamariki Ora Nurse, who provides additional care and support for young māmā and their pēpi.

Together, we are committed to re-indigenising the lives of hapū wāhine through the revitalisation of traditional Māori birthing and child-raising practices.

We work alongside you to ensure you can confidently navigate your hapūtanga journey with access to the resources, support, and mātauranga you are entitled to as Ngāti Porou.

Nāti Pēpi has its own birthing unit — Te Puna Wai Primary Care Birthing Unit, based at Te Puia Hospital — where māmā can birth on their own terms, on their own whenua, surrounded by their own people. Our midwives and team provide holistic clinical care that is deeply entwined with traditional birthing practices and education, ensuring your journey is grounded in wairua, whakapapa, and whanaungatanga.

We regularly host hapūtanga wānanga along the Coast, offering a space to share knowledge, strengthen connections, and celebrate the sacredness of birth. Our service covers the region from Uawa to Pōtaka.
If you choose one of our midwives, we ask that you plan to birth your pēpi at Te Puna Wai, as we are unable to provide home births or birthing support at Gisborne Hospital due to limited capacity.

Our E Tipu E Rea Tamariki Ora Nurse provides ongoing support for young māmā and pēpi — including Tamariki Ora checks, immunisations in the home, and wraparound care to help you and your whānau thrive in those early years.

In addition to midwifery and nursing care, Nāti Pēpi provides Tamariki Ora (Well Child) services for your pēpi — ensuring ongoing support for you and your whānau from conception through to early childhood.
