Hopeful Horizons: The Power of Collaboration

In November 2024, a visionary partnership took shape between EIT Tairāwhiti and Tūhono Whānau, one of Ngāti Porou Oranga’s Whānau Oranga services. Together, they launched "Kia Timata," a programme designed to address a pressing need: access to relevant and culturally enriching educational opportunities for whānau in coastal and remote communities.

Through extensive community engagement, it became clear that many whānau faced barriers to learning experiences that reflected their values, traditions, and way of life. Kia Timata emerged as a response to this need, offering a tailored, hands-on learning experience rooted in mātauranga Māori.

A Unique Learning Experience in Ruatorea

Held in Ruatorea, Kia Timata delivered an immersive educational journey through four key modules:

These workshops provided a space where rangatahi and whānau could reconnect with traditional knowledge, learn new skills, and foster a sense of manaakitanga and whanaungatanga.

Empowering Whānau, Strengthening Communities

The impact of Kia Timata was profound, with strong attendance and engagement from local whānau. Participants expressed a deep appreciation for the opportunity to learn in ways that resonated with their cultural identity and everyday lives.

Kaiāwhina from Tūhono Whānau reflected:

“Working alongside EIT and utilizing their space was an incredible experience. We highly recommend future collaborations, as we all serve the same community.”

For some, Kia Timata was more than just a learning experience—it became a way to honour their loved ones. One whānau member who attended the korowai weaving workshop was inspired to create a special piece for a whānau unveiling, finding solace and connection through the art form.

“She was appreciative that this space gave her the opportunity to give something to whanau she created herself. The chance for the local community in Ruatoria to access learning opportunities they wanted was too important to miss. Keeping the door open for others to ‘be nosey’ helped remove any whakama.”

Looking Ahead

Kia Timata stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, showing that when organisations with a shared passion for community come together, real change happens. The success of this programme has sparked hope for its continuation, ensuring more whānau can benefit from these valuable learning experiences in the future.

As one participant summed it up:

“These programmes are invaluable for motivation, whakawhanaungatanga, dedicating time to a project, and seeing it through to the end.”

With the spirit of Kia Timata firmly in place, the future looks bright for community-led education on the Coast
